    Jim's approach to individual therapy

The most important thing I do is listen to you--what is your story, what brings you to therapy? I try to bring humility and compassion to my work with all my patients. As you discuss your difficulties opportunities open to view them in a new way, or work on using new tools to deal with those issues.

I am here to help when--or if--you want to change something. I hope to help you bring mindfulness to what your situation is and how it is affecting you. I do not have a rigid way of working with people--I am here to support you in the way that you find helpful.

Mindfulness--compassionate mindfulness--can help us all focus on what is going on in the current moment, take a step back from thoughts, emotions and become aware of what is going on in the body and the environment around us. Mindfulness helps one develop the capacity to intentionally direct one's attention to whatever is most useful/helpful in the moment.

    Jim's approach to Family therapy

Through his private practice Jim will offer to work with families who have a family member with a major mental illness using Family Psychoeducation, CBT for Psychosis, Mindfulness and Social Rhythm techniques.

Jim Svensson was trained in Multi-Family Psychoeducation--an evidence based model therapy for families who have a member who has a major mental illness such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder.

Jim was trained by Dr. McFarland--originator of the technique--and started the first group in Michigan in 2001. At the Michigan Medicine Outpatient Psychiatry PREP Early psychosis program Jim offered both the group and work with individual families as well as evaluations and CBT for Psychosis.
